چکیده

We investigate the flux and the event rate of the supernova relic neutrino background (SRN) at the SuperKamiokande detector for various neutrino oscillation models with parameters inferred from recent experimental results. A realistic model of neutrino emission from supernova explosions and several models of the cosmic star formation history are adopted in the calculation. The number flux over entire energy range is found to be 11−15 cms. We discuss the detection possibility of SRN, comparing this SRN flux with other background neutrinos in more detail than previous studies. The only one possible energy window free from the other backgrounds is found in 8− 12 MeV, and in that range the most optimistic event rate at SuperKamiokande is ∼ 0.3 yr. However, this energy window is narrow compared with the energy resolution, and hence contamination of other background neutrinos from different Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 29 February 2008 energy range makes the SRN detection quite difficult in practice.

Relic neutrino background from cosmological supernovae

Present and future observations of supernova relic neutrinos (SRNs), i.e., a cosmological neutrino background from past core-collapse supernova explosions, potentially give us useful information concerning various fields of astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics. We review recent progress of theoretical and observational studies of SRNs, particularly focusing on the detectability and also...

Core-collapse supernova neutrinos and neutrino properties

Core-collapse supernovae are powerful neutrino sources. The observation of a future (extra-)galactic supernova explosion or of the relic supernova neutrinos might provide important information on the supernova dynamics, on the supernova formation rate and on neutrino properties. One might learn more about unknown neutrino properties either from indirect effects in the supernova (e.g. on the exp...

Decays of Supernova Relic Neutrinos

We propose that future observation of supernova relic neutrino (SRN) can be used to probe neutrino decay models. We focus on invisible (e.g., Majoron) decays, and work out the general solution of SRN kinetic equations in the presence of oscillations plus decay. We then apply the general solution to specific decay scenario, and show that the predicted SRN event rate can span the whole range belo...

Supernova Relic Neutrinos in Liquid Argon detectors

We study the possibility of detecting the background of Supernova Relic Neutrinos (SRN) with liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detectors. As far as this study is concerned, these experimental devices are mainly sensitive to electron neutrino signals, and could provide further information on both Supernova explosion mechanism and star formation rate at redshifts z ≤ 1. We study in detai...

Constraints on the Star Formation Rate from Supernova Relic Neutrino Observations

We discuss the implication of the observation of supernova relic neutrinos on the study of the star formation rate in galaxies. The limit recently obtained at SuperKamiokande (SK) is already marginally significant, giving the limit that selective extinction of galaxies EB−V < 0.4, allowing for uncertainties in the model supernova neutrino flux. We argue that the increase of the SK statistics by...
